Make very complicated thing accessible and very readable, but if you want serious math then this is not the book for you, however, if you want to understand chaos with some real math without going very deep this is the book for you

Accessible chaos

Strogatz's approach to Nonlinear Dynamics is suitable for anyone equipped with a good basic understanding of ordinary differential equations. He allows the reader to gradually build-up their understanding through a series of illustrations and examples - this is the sort of book that will be indispensable the night before a final year undergraduate Chaos and Nonlinear Dynamics exam. Not excessively mathematical, contains solid explanations and leaves you wanting to learn more about this fantastic area of physics.

Great intro to nonlinear dynamics with excellent examples

This book is an excellent introductory graduate level text on nonlinear dynamics for those who wish to understand the basic concepts before seeing the mathematical rigor at the heart of the subject. Strogatz avoids getting caught up in mathematical nuances which often cloud the big picture for non-math students, and thereby clearly impresses upon the reader the essence of nonlinear dynamics, eventually building up to chaos. The examples and problems are truly unique and inspiring. This book is an excellent starting place for someone who knows little or nothing about nonlinear dynamics but has done some basic work with linear differential equations and linear algebra.

Spellbinding Stories for Younger Children

The Tale of Peter Rabbit was written in 1900 and has stood the test of time very well. Generations of children have loved the story of Peter Rabbit, Squirrel Nutkin, Tom Kitten and Jemima Puddle-Duck among others and treasured the books of Beatrix Potter. It is up there among the greats of children's literature with Wind in the Willows, The Water Babies, Peter Pan, Treasure Island and many others.In these days of computer games and electronic toys of one kind or another, books sadly are sometimes not as high on the list as they were a few years ago, perhaps that is why literacy in schools is not all that it could be. Personally as a child books were always my first love and Christmas would not have been the same without a Rupert annual.Stories that involve animals as the main characters in books always seem to fascinate young children and Peter Rabbit has always been up there with the best. Next time you have to buy a present for a child, or even want to treat one of your younger grandchildren for no particular reason. Instead of looking for the latest DVD why not buy them a book. Peter Rabbit is a good one to start with.

Much Loved Favourite

As a mother, I read this to my children over and over again until they knew every word by heart. They loved it. So I have encouraged my grandchildren in the same way. My partner's granddaughter absolutely loves Miss Moppet and, just like my children did, knows every word - and corrects us if we change anything! Beatrix Potter's whole library is a must for every child!

A completely unintelligible computer scan

It's not made clear anywhere that I could find on the Amazon page for this version that it's a version of the original text created by a computer that scans a facsimile of the text and reproduces it in modern type. As the original text is obviously very old, the computer software was unable to properly 'read' the scanned images and as a result I'd estimate 30% of the text is garbled nonsense. As a brief example: the old-fashioned 's'is interpreted by the computer as an 'f' in every case, and entire lines appear as though someone has randomly mashed the keyboard.Obviously there is a reason why this version is so cheap, but what you get is completely unintelligible and useless; I threw mine in the recycling.

The book had been made by a online software and then printed off - it had not been checked or proof read so there were thousands of spelling mistakes and every s had for some reason become an f so it was impossible to read. In the end I returned it on Amazon and got my money back.

A superb book. The explanations were clear and every time I thought of a question the author immediately answered it which just shows how much thought went in to the book.As someone who, stupidly, never really looked at patterns before I have to say this book was perfect. If you take the time with some of the chapters, particularly the one about the Bridge pattern, then you can come up with the actual pattern before the author gives it. You can do this because the authors give you the information and context you need to work out what the solution will be.The only slightly annoying point about the book is that the self satisfaction of the authors sometimes gets in the way of more important matters, however that doesn't spoil a good book.I would recommend that anyone who enjoys this book goes on to look at the books written by Craig Larman, Robert C. Martin and Joshua Kerievsky. They all cover object oriented design and patterns in more detail.

Prior to purchasing this book I had attended a OOAD course, explaining basic patterns, and studied a number of books that included the GoF "bible", so I already had a basic understanding of design patterns. However, what makes this book very good is that from all the books I have read this one offers the best introduction into world of OO design patterns.Although the book explains the very basic patterns, its purpose is to teach you how to understand patterns so that the concept applied at understanding the ones within the book can be used to understand the more complicated ones.I only wish I had bought this book before buying the more reference type books because I would have saved myself a lot studying time.This book is aimed at those that want to start to understand the design pattern concept, although it can also be used as a reference book for the limited patterns explained.

Sadly this is not the complete story by any means. A huge chunk is left out where the travellers gang up on Boule de Suif and try to persuade her to change her mind. There is no mention of the bawdy discussions they share or of their merriment when she finally capitulates. Most disappointing. I will be looking to by the full version

A Wry Take on Human Nature

Considering this was written about a century and a half ago, Maupassant's collection of tales inspired by the Franco-Prussian War is remarkably fresh and vivid. It starts with his most famous "masterpiece" named after the "round as a dumpling" character of "Boule de Suif", the kindhearted prostitute who is so exploited and humiliated by the hypocritical bunch of characters who share a coach with her to escape the conquering Prussian army.Writing with deceptive simplicity, great clarity and wit, Maupassant captures the sensations of travelling on a coach through the deep snow and winter dark, the periodic hunger and discomfort en route, the initially welcome shelter of the inn, the fear of encountering enemy soldiers. The nine ostensibly highly respectable passengers are given clearly distinct personalities and different social positions , displaying the all too common less attractive aspects of human nature: greed, prejudice, insensitivity, self-interest, and desire to justify their actions. Perhaps they are stereotypes but this makes for an absorbing read in which the author plays cleverly on one's sense of outrage, empathy with "Boule de Suif", despite her unsavoury profession, and wish to see her tormentors pay. Yet would we have behaved any better?In addition to a detailed introduction, the stories are very thoroughly annotated. I found very useful the explanations of various classical references, the relevant details of the Franco-Prussian War plus some other snippets of information - such as "un pipe en écume" being a meerschaum pipe with a bowl carved out of a substance resembling hardened foam.If English is your native tongue, there are translations available on Google - oddly enough with some of the mildly risqué passages omitted, I'm not sure why.

Good authors are worth reading

Until Amazon sort out the presentation of " complete works" they are almost useless. I was hoping for a set of books so that I could track my reading in every volume. Not so. Couple this with the very poor programming that leaves unwanted sliders active on the screen even when they are not visible and as a reader the Ki8ndle Fire has regressed five st eps from the original liquid ink version. Wake up Amazon PLEASE
