Où l'on retrouve Olivier, le poulbot déluré des "Allumettes suédoises". À la mort de sa mère, la mercière de la rue Labat, cet enfant de la rue se trouve brusquement plongé dans un univers bourgeois, celui de son oncle Henri et de sa tante Victoria, riches propriétaires d'un empire papetier. Le décalage est cruel, tant en ce qui concerne le langage que les "bonnes" manières, dont il n'a vraiment que faire. La très belle Victoria l'effraie un peu, par ses sempiternels rappels à l'ordre et son air compassé, mais tonton Henri s'avère vite un compagnon d'infortune, prêt à partager avec lui le goût de la vraie vie. Notre jeune héros va progressivement découvrir, au-delà des apparences, la véritable substance dont sont faits les êtres qui l'entourent et qui l'aiment malgré lui. Un beau roman initiatique, largement autobiographique, et une belle leçon de vie racontée dans une langue savoureuse. Les noms de marques et les slogans publicitaires (le bon vermifuge Lune...) émaillent le récit et lui donnent une touche de nostalgie.

The first and main novel of the Rougon-Macquart cycle

It's a very thrilling novel, setting out the origins of the Rougon-Macquart dynasty, right from Tante Dide and through the next two generations. It's a page turner particularly if one has read already a few of Zola's novels of the series, as it sets the scene and helps visualizing the family tree and makes all personages fall neatly into place. It clarifies Zola's intentions of characters for the various family members in terms of the influence of Heredity and the Environment. It is as Zola declared : L'Histoire naturelle et sociale d'une famille sous le second empire.

The best Zola novel

This book was written nearly 150 years ago yet feels utterly contemporary. In this book, Zola turns his attention to those members of his fictional disfuntional family who work in or around the railway. Unlike some of his other books, Zola sets aside his fixation with the social injustices of the day to create a thriller about a murder on a train and the culprits' disintegrating lives as they attempt to conceal their crime. It may be far-fetched, but the story moves at a cracking pace. The atmosphere is enhanced by the evocative descriptions of the engine drivers battling to control their steam trains. "Germinal" may be Zola's masterpiece, but nothing else he wrote matches this gripping effort for excitement.A great read.

one-track mind?

I stumbled upon this book for 15p in a charity shop and now it holds pride of place in my second-hand book collection. Which is a pity, because a book so driven by mad lust, unfathomable plans, crazed desires, selfishness,metal and flesh, blood and rust, belongs somewhere else. It belongs to then, and now, effortlessly transgressing boundaries of time, sucking the reader into its twisted murderous love affair wherein the reader is reduced to the state of impotent voyeur, unable to judge- much like the impulsive protagonists.Its' themes of modernity versus the base instincts in man are ruthlessly explored ,each character is seeped in, and bound to, their own selfish ends; their own misguided understandings of possession, set against a backdrop of an industrial revoulution which reflects the disasterous shortcomings of the protagonists and their boiling provincial inadequacies. don't, don't read it on the train...

A cool and technically masterful love story

The accompanying notes explain that Goethe wrote this work in the form of a Novelle, which is a particular stylised form in which the characters and events are compressed to the minimum necessary to achieve the desired artistic result. There is a chapter where the characters explain the plot as being like a chemical reaction (hence the title because chemists at the time thought that some elements had an affinity for others) so that AB and CD meet and become AC and BD. And this is exactly how the book progresses. Charlotte is with Eduard when The Captain and Ottilie come into their lives, whereupon Charlotte falls for the Captain and Eduard for Ottilie. The characters don't even have surnames.The effect on the reader is rather like reading a detailed and clever summary of a novel rather than the actual novel itself. All actions and motivations are set out and elucidated so that there is never any doubt about feelings or causation, or for that matter where the plot is heading. I found this a bit disconcerting at first but if you regard it as, in effect, cutting out the dull bits, then you can enjoy the plotting and emotional see-sawing. Thus there is not much texture here but lots of pace.Even within these limits Goethe does manage some pretty sharp writing and he throws up a continuous barrage of interesting observations about the world and the relationships between the parties. However to me parts of the book feel more like a technical writing exercise rather than something to settle down with for pleasure.

Sparse & Masterful

I was surprised when I saw a recent profile of Le Guin in The Guardian which mentioned that she had begun a new series of books - the first of which is GIFTS. I admire Le Guin so much that I was wary approaching it - not wanting an idol to fall at this stage. There are very few writers of her age who would embark on such a thing and even fewer who could capture and sustain an audience for a fresh series of books. However, my trepidation was unfounded: Le Guin is (as always) an exception - GIFTS is a majestic, troubling and powerful book. It treads completely fresh ground - although there are thematic trheads that tie it particularly to the latter books in the Earthsea sequence: Tehanu and The Other Wind. It is resolutely an adult novel that only comes into the fantasy genre by default. As with all her fiction she sketches in a new world deftly and subtly so that you scarcely notice what it is she has done. She never uses pyrotechnics or familiar genre tricks. She just writes with piercing honesty and simplicity. Over the years I've read the odd review of Le Guin books criticising either her prose style or her politics: flat, dull preaching. To such critics I say "numbskulls" - Le Guin's prose is sparse, yes, but it is stylish. Her politics are visible but they are thought through and measured. She is provocative, but never on a soap box. I hope she is hale and hearty and long-long lived and that GIFTS marks the beginning of a sequence of books as remarkable as Earthsea was - but written by a wise old woman who, I suspects, knows everything implortant that there is to be known about the human condition.

Lisa See's writing is magnificent and I'm so in love with this book and its predecessor

I am so emotional right now; Lisa See's writing is magnificent and I'm so in love with this book and its predecessor.I was nervous about reading this book because I loved the first one so much and I was worried this one wouldn't compare to the first, but wow it did! At first I found Joy annoying, but her character development has made me adore her endlessly. I still love Pearl, like I always have done, and I'm kinda happy May wasn't the center of focus in this book. I felt so many emotions during this read and it's honestly impossible for me to put all of them into words.... my heart broke and burst so many times throughout this read and Lisa See's writing is so, so powerful. I also learnt a lot from this book, which is something I always adore about historical fiction, and I met some characters that have firm places in my heart. I love that Lisa's characters all have faults and that she doesn't hide them, but instead embraces them and celebrates them.I hope that one day there's another book in this series - I want to know about their lives back in America so much.

I love a good treasure hunt story...

But unfortunately this isn't one of them. I bought this book as I have an interest in the Knights Templars roughly equal to the main protagonist in the story and find myself buying anything which contains references to them, however vague. This means I've read many a rubbish, and some not so rubbish, Templar-related 'fiction' book over the years, but this has got to be the worst one by far. Badly constructed and written, with unbelievable characters which vie with a mediocre plot, it leaves the reader both underwhelmed and somewhat frustrated.I had never heard of the writer before and was surprised to find there is a previous novel containing the same characters. This is because the main male character (obviously English because of his ludicrous name) is supposed to be an ex-spy or something, yet he doesn't seem to even have common sense, let alone any spy-like tendencies. He routinely assumes they won't be followed, when they're leaving a trail obvious enough that a deaf, dumb and blind person could follow! And how can he be so surprised when their adversary catches up with them every time? The female character is a strange mix of overwrought woman and steely nerves, sometimes within a sentence of each other and it doesn't really work. And where does she get all those notebook computers? Forever leaving them behind all over the place, but always has another one available to use when they need crank up the next plot device.I read the entire book only because I hate to not finish any book, but it didn't get any better as it went on and by the time I'd finished I felt a sense of disappointment at a wasted opportunity. It is possible that there is an okay story in there somewhere, but the author, unfortunately, has no idea how to tell it.

I picked up this book from a charity shop. I have a weakness for codswallop so wasn't expecting literature of the highest order, but it was so much worse than I'd imagined that I found myself groaning and laughing sentence by sentence. It's worse than Dan Brown. Hell, it's worse than Patricia Cornwell. This author CANNOT WRITE. S/he may have a story to tell, but is hampered by having no talent for English on the page. Her/his English ex-spy character uses phrases nobody has uttered except in jest for about 100 years, and only then if they were very pompous or aiming to induce raised eyebrows. Cliche, cliche, cliche and all the mixed metaphor and non sequitur you could hope to find in the work of an illiterate teenager's first attempt at fiction.
