Fans of Jerry Spinelli's STARGIRL will jump and shout when they hear about the sequel, LOVE, STARGIRL.This was not a book that I expected to have a sequel, but in true Jerry Spinelli tradition, Stargirl's story lives on.Moving from Arizona to Pennsylvania has Stargirl missing the desert, the cactus, and especially Leo. Although she is not absolutely certain about their continued relationship, Stargirl uses her year-long letter to keep Leo up-to-date on the events of her new life. She doesn't ever anticipate sending the letter. In fact, she mentions that Leo will most likely only get to read it if she actually sees him again.Filled with fantastic memories and new adventures, Spinelli will have readers falling in love with Stargirl all over again. Memories of the past will remind readers of her wonderful spirit, while her new neighborhoods offer great variety. There's cute and always curious Dootsie, who introduces herself as a "human bean." Dootsie takes Stargirl to meet Betty Lou, who fears anything beyond her trailer door. Then there's Charlie, who haunts the local cemetery and his late wife's grave. The heart of life

It's been one of those long weekends with everyone off somewhere, so I spent the time with Stargirl, reading her long diary-like letter between feeding the cat and doing the cleaning ... and writing, of course. Stargirl is so endearing, it is difficult to imagine anyone not wanting to spend time with her even if that might be challenging. And when you do spend time in her company some of her stardust inevitably rubs off on you. And hers is a special brand of magic. It's hard to put a name to it. She's different. Being a homeschooler could well have relegated her to the fringes of society, but she has in no way opted out. She is no angry renegade. On the contrary, she is constantly at the very heart of life in her encounters with the people around her. Many of those she befriends are people who are stuck at the limits of society because they are different or because they find living in society difficult. They might greet her with anger or indifference at first, but she persists, coming to appreciate their special brand of being. And in making them feel they are appreciated for what they are, she helps ease them back into the fold. Such a role might make some bigheaded. Not Stargirl. She's a natural, a solid mixture of self-assurance and self-questioning. Of course she makes mistakes, but through her courage in going out of her way to encounter people who are authentic, however strange they might seem, she learns from every single encounter.Jerry Spinelli adopts a different point of view in this follow-up to his successful Stargirl book. The entire narration is seen from the perspective of Stargirl as if she were writing an on-going dialogue with Leo, her one-time boyfriend now left behind in another State. Dialogue? Well mostly monologue. But there are moments when she fills in for Leo and converses with him about what is happening to her. Now such inner dialogues can lead astray and she does get it wrong sometimes, but with a little help from her friends she always ends up finding the right way. A bit disappointing, as a WM3 supporter

I have followed the WM3 case over the last few years, having read Damien's previous book Almost Home, and seen the three Paradise Lost documentaries, as well as the Peter Jackson & Amy Berg documentary West of Memphis. I enjoy Damien's writing, despite the odd nasty comment, as other reviewers have mentioned -- some of the things he says serve to remind you that he's just a regular everyday guy with a few petty prejudices, not the wise leader he's sometimes made out to be.If you are buying this book, you need to know that about 80% of it is an exact reprinting of Almost Home. Another 10% appears to be reprinting of Damien's blog posts campaigning for help with their case over the last few years. The final 10% is new material, from what I can tell.With a name like "Life After Death", I expected the book to primarily focus on Damien's experience after coming out of prison, but that part amounts to barely a chapter. There is, for example, a picture of he and his wife in New Zealand with Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, but no information about that trip. This smacks of false advertising.I don't criticise Damien here, so much as the publisher. Repackaging previous work in a new book without making this clear to those purchasing is a rip-off.You might enjoy this if you haven't already read Almost Home.

It makes one look at the world differently.

I know it's almost three years late with this review. I don't want to miss anything out as there are many points that need addressing.Especially considering the death penalty is still being used in the States.Before I continue, consider you might run into what seems to be SPOILERS which won't be my intention, but I'm just warning in case. Also, I don't dislike Americans. Every country has their faults. It just feels as though some states are a step away from burning suspected witches at the stake.That's literally what almost happened to the author here. Had he not taken the Alford plea (hopefully spelt right now), there seems little doubt he'd be alive now.The book explains not only life on death row, but the back history of someone who'd been persecuted for years before being arrested.Reading about death row is horrific, but in a way it's even worse to know the betrayal that lead to an innocent man being accused of murder, along with his friends. There's undoubtedly so much hatred and venom coming from those claiming be righteous. Many underestimate the destruction these individuals cause to innocent lives. From what I've read and my own experiences when it comes to packs of braindead followers; the majority, particularly that Jerry Driver, had decided Damien was going down after first laying eyes on him. This isn't uncommon behaviour but it is disgusting that such persecution exists. It is also unprofessional and doesn't make sense. I've met some nut jobs but Damien was locked up by those in need of some psychiatric assistance themselves.As I was reading this, I could feel the hostility of those in the town and the obvious witch hunt taking place. And this was being done to a minor two years beforehand. This person was quickly made a scapegoat, blamed for a crime committed by someone else. I don't really want to go into details about who could have done it. It's a sickening miscarriage of justice. I never finished other books relating to death row because the torture is another kind of inhumane, still accepted by those that only really want to see someone die. I recognise the mentality. We've all heard others talk about what "should" happen to murderers and never is it acknowledged the possibility the accused could be innocent. I've personally always been against the death penalty, even when I've been sickened by crimes committed against innocents. Those in power have to be rational.Taking someone's life for killing, innocent or guilty, isn't rational! The very fact that person could be innocent and yet could still be executed, is sick beyond belief.Being from the UK, I remember reading and watching documentaries about condemned such as Derek Bentley and Ruth Ellis. DECADES AGO, before the death sentence was abolished over here. For those that don't know, Derek Bentley had a low mental age and didn't even pull the trigger. I add this because it also reminded me of some of the inmates mentioned in 'Life After Death'.Damien also describes others on death row. When he talks about them, you start to see how they've been completely stripped of their spirit along with everything else. By then, all that's being killed is a shell.Who punishes those in power?The question usually asked to every anti-death penalty believer is "What if you lost someone to murder?" Well answer this: What if someone you cared about ended up condemned for something they didn't do?I've noticed quite a few people judging the WM3 for taking the Alford plea. Jason Baldwin would have stayed inside from what I've read, but he couldn't watch his friend die. Anyone with any sense would have done the exact same thing without question. Now some people insist "Oh no, no, I would have kept fighting!"That is very easy to say when not in that position. It's a good job they took that plea.Now an important issue I feel was overlooked. Some people might not think it was serious but I do because it involves medication. From what I'm aware, Damien has been judged quite severely for how he reacted during the trial. Whenever it's been brought up, I think he described his actions as foolish. What needs to be acknowledged is that he was on Anti-Depressants at the time. I don't know what he'd been prescribed but from experience of taking them myself and loved ones also, I know you cannot take anyone seriously when they're under the influence of that particular medication. Although everyone is affected differently, I can say one can go as far as giggling like an idiot even after suffering a loss. Even though those drugs are needed, they are often prescribed for the sake of it. And then it would have been hell alone being forced to stop abruptly. Obviously he was forced to go without them. Aside from the withdrawal symptoms, all the memories return and are much more intense. This is an important subject because Damien has been ridiculed for his every movement, not only by some so-called body language "experts" but at the trial and just afterwards, every little comment he made was taken literally. I personally didn't see what the fuss was about or what everyone expected, but it is important to know that it wasn't a simple case of a teenager being a bit obnoxious. Apart from anything else, you must also remember that if a person knows they're innocent, in their minds, they're probably expecting someone else to come and save the day. Topped with having their mood heightened by what actually is a mind-altering drug, they may come across as being outrageous. I cringe when I remember what I was like on those tablets. I reiterate this because people bring up how Damien was behaving at the time.There seems to be little awareness over such matters which I consider barbaric in itself.I recommend this book to anyone. Anyone. It gives an insight into a world we're ignoring. We cannot pretend there are not innocent people waiting to die. That doesn't mean we have to ignore the victims, it means all the more reason to find answers.I will probably add more later. I enjoyed reading this. Some of the comments were hilarious.

beautifully written. really shows how insightful he is about everything that's happened to him. no bitterness for the people that made him feel like he was an ''other''. im glad its not another prisoner novel because that would distract the reader for the insightful intelligent person that he is. full of imagery definitely one for a literature fan to be honest. there were parts that reminded me of toni morrisons beloved especially the part were he talks about the barn like house that he moves too. very good use of language to convey such beautiful but eerie imagery

A great read from start to finish

A great book from a well respected and vastly experienced Author. The fictional account was fun as well as being laced with cautionary tales that anyone having served in the British Military will be recognise in an instant. I enjoyed our often spineless politicians and some of our less competent NATO neighbors getting the lashing they deserve. A great read for anyone interested in the genre or who has been a Clancy fan. Couldn't put it down.

Excellent well written book.

This is so near the mark in it's description of our current military situation, and the difficulties arising from multi nation decision making from 28 countries who form a supposed alliance. So many times in recent history we have seen how ineffective NATO has been when having to make a decision that requires all members to be in agreement.

The idea of telling the story of the South of Italy in pictures, of the immediate post-war period, still radically peasant but in which the first signs of profound changes could be glimpsed, has been resumed and accomplished in this book, which presents a selection of the most eloquent pictures taken by Fosco Maraini during his extraordinary photographic tour through "our Southern Italy" and its most fascinating sites.

Apparently based on actual experiences of the author, this autobiographical novel narrates the struggle of a boy, aided and abetted sometimes by his two brothers, against his tyrannical mother, nicknamed "Follcoche" for folle cochonne. The mother makes normal control freaks seem easy going, and rules the household, her husband, and the numerous tutors she employs in an almost psychotically manipulative way. The novel never explains the roots of this odd behaviour, like many monsters of fiction she's just very bad, although in this case she isn't fictional. The reader roots for the boy the whole way through, and cheers him on after every little triumph over his monstrous mother. The mother is an unforgettable character. That the author survived intact, if he did, is a miracle. The French is of intermediate/advanced level, so if you're a beginner this isn't the book for you.

A book for a lifetime

I read this book for the first time when I was 16 years old; I loved it. Bazin's manages to take us through his hard childhood with a pinch of humour. I read it again (twice) as an adult and I still love it. I will probably read it again. This book is part of a trilogy: 'La mort du petit cheval' is the following chapter; well worth reading too.

A genuinely mind-expanding read!

This book manages to make some of the most complex science in human history accessible and understandable. I haven't studied science for 20 years but with some perseverance I managed to learn an incredible amount from this book. Also it is full of incident, and human drama, and humour, and all kinds of entertaining anecdotes which sweeten the pill when you have to wade through 500 pages of physics! Not only did I learn about the Big Bang theory (which I now realise is no more a "theory" than radio waves or electricity) but I found myself genuinely understanding for the first time lots of physics I had supposedly already "learned". And not just physics: geography, astronomy, history... It's not an easy read, but well within the grasp of most educated people: a book that repays your effort and then some.

Great book! really clear and easy to understand!

In the past I have made web pages most of which were ugly, disorganised and all in all abit rubbish. I thought probably best I get a book on the matter if I'm ever to create sites that are worth looking at.With all the hype surrounding HTML5 I decided on this one.Im only half way through but so far have found it to be brilliant. A great incite in to good design practises as well and look at most of the new elements in HTML5 with out getting bogged down with too much technical jargon.All the standards are available on the internet for free [...] What your money buys you is an explanation of how to use this information to make high functioning websites Would definitely recommend this to anyone who is would like to know about the capabilities of HTML5.

It'll do.

HTML 5 is shifting ground. Anyone who seeks a book on this subject at this time should keep this in mind. It's settling down but any book is going to have trouble staying completely current. The authors acknowledge this continually throughout the book, pointing out what's new, what they think is likely to be shelved. So one thing that is frustrating about this book is that it gives the impression what you're reading is written on the wind a lot of the time. I haven't marked the score lower because of that because it's hard to avoid and because the book is not intended as a reference, but as (per the title), an introduction to HTML.As an introduction to HTML, it serves well enough. You could just go to the W3C site and read through their HTML 5 section and get a lot of what is in HTML 5 yourself, but it's significantly more helpful to have a guided tour from a book like this. The book includes a fair amount of realish-world examples. It also devotes a good amount of space to supporting assistive technologies which is good.As an introduction, the book serves its purpose. I can't imagine going back to this to re-read. I also have to mark it down because what is mildly tiresome juvenille humour at the start becomes downright wearying by the end. By the time the authors are telling me they're going to come round to my house and scribble on my FrontPage CD (yes, very funny LOLLOLOL, I do most of my webwork in Vi as it happens), I'm just wishing I'd found a book that had a bit more of a thorough, business-like approach. The authors seem to be "geeks" whereas what I want is just information, concise and to the point.Still, the book is useful. It's good to have a decent view of what is now emerging so that you can work it in to your projects from the start right now.

The best Intro to HTML5 available

The first edition was the first HTML5 book I read and ever since have only had good words. It was one of the best programming books I've ever read. It didn't drag on about specifications and theoretical implementations, it got right down to the nitty gritty of actually coding. The first edition is only surpassed by this, even better edition.As HTML5 has moved forward since the release of the first edition, so has the techniques and standards for coding with the new APIs. With this update you get to dive into the getUserMedia API, take a look at some WebRTC and even some new geolocation and storage techniques. Everything you need to know has been chucked into this no-fuss beginners guide to being awesome at HTML5. Even if you're not a beginner, it's a book that is a must own for constant refreshers.If you consider yourself a developer for the web; You must own this book.

Thought provoking tale

I listened to the audio version of this book and Philip Franklin does a great job with the narration. I haven’t read Jon Krakauer before and I enjoyed the author’s writing style and the gradual unfolding of Chris McCandless’ story. I’d never heard of Chris McCandless before this and I found the story fascinating, tragic and scarcely credible in parts. If this had been fiction I can imagine the reader or listener berating the ‘hero’ for his lack of foresight and preparation before embarking on such a dangerous and uncertain journey.Jon Krakauer explores Chris’ McCandless’s life, and death, through his family, Chris’ own notes, photographs and letters, plus the people he met on his travels, most of whom felt a compelling pull towards the young man and came to love him.Basically, I’m not sure what to think. Here’s a highly academically intelligent young man who had a privileged upbringing, protesting strongly against world hunger and the wastage of food. He was angry at his father who lead a double life for several years, which is understandable. Perhaps it was a combination of these things, coupled with the books he was fond of reading by authors such as Jack London, Tolstoy and Thoreau to name just a few, which fired his imagination and passions for the idea of travel and survival in remote and unforgiving areas, ultimately the wilderness. He believed a person should own nothing apart from whatever they could carry. No longer would he answer to Chris McCandless; he was now Alexander Supertramp, master of his own destiny.The story begins on April 27th, 1992 as Chris, or Alex as he now calls himself, is hitching from Fairbanks, Alaska and is offered a lift by Jim Gallien. He wants a ride to the edge of Denali National Park so he can just walk into the bush and live off the land for a few months.Chris’ death was a tragedy which could have been avoided if he’d prepared for his stay in the wilds of Alaska with practicality and learned enough about endurance in such a harsh environment. That he chose not to, shows a lack of common sense, an underestimation of the wilderness and what it takes to survive.Chris’ idealism and intensity caused a tremendous amount of hurt and suffering. It seems he had no thought of how his lack of communication would affect his parents, Walt and Billie, and Carine, the sister he supposedly loved. I can only imagine how distraught his family must have been during the whole time Chris was missing from their lives. Then, to learn he died in such dreadful circumstances had to have been beyond devastating.During the course of the narrative Jon Krakauer does an impressive job of delving into the mindset of adventurers drawn to the ‘call of the wild’, including himself. It’s apparent, and understandable, that he feels a fascination for, and identifies with, Chris McCandless, given the parallels between their lives. He doesn’t claim to be an impartial biographer, quite the opposite. I don’t, however, agree with the view that Chris’ mistakes were innocent ones. He deliberately went into the Alaskan wilderness rashly, unprepared and without the basic necessities or any kind of reserve or support should he find himself in an emergency situation, despite all advice to the contrary.In the end, Chris lived his life the way he wanted to, mostly isolated from people and minus the pointless, as he saw it, trappings of a materialistic society, and paid the ultimate price. It’s still a very sad end to such a short life. I found the recounting of the last few weeks of his life, via the journals he kept, very poignant. Especially since it seems Chris was ready to return to civilisation and, had he possessed the relevant map and knowledge, would more than likely have made it. Jon Krakauer’s theory on the cause of Chris’ death seems the most reasonable explanation and makes a lot of sense. I’ll be checking out more of this author’s work.

Will written and interesting!

JK writes this epic tale with the knowledge of someone that has done their research, knows their topic and has at least some inkling of what Chris was feeling and trying to do. He's taken risks himself, albeit more calculated ones and clearly with better odds attached. This book was a pleasure to read, CMcC was an adventurer, a man who baulked at the idea of living in a stone house surrounded by technology, other people and living a comfortable and convenient life - he yearned for the solace of a lonely life and felt better connected to the wilds of Alaska than any WiFi. Was he ill-prepared? I think so. Idealistic and maybe a little naive? Possibly. But the gamble for CMcC was worth it, unfortunately, it didn't pay off!

A Brillant, Unforgetable Story

This is an excellent true story of an intelligent, intense, and idealistic young man, who abandoned his upper middle class family and became Alexander Supertramp, a loner living out of a backpack as he wandered throughout the United States. His journey ended in Alaska in 1992.The author researches this young man's short life in an attempt to explain why someone who has everything going for him would have chosen this way of life. It is a shame that an obviously bright and intelligent person would have ventured into the wild without even a compass and a good map.I highly recommend this book. The film and soundtrack are also excellent.
