“Even Dogs in the Wild” by Ian RankinThis is number 20 in the John Rebus books – and the 3rd since his retirement. I was a tad unsure about the previous 2 (“Standing in Another Man's Grave” and “Saints of the Shadow Bible”) as the characters didn’t quite fit together. Indeed, I thought Ian Rankin was perhaps mistaken in continuing the Rebus series. However, I was wrong and this novel is an excellent murder mystery and a great read!The usual characters are back, including DI Siobhan Clarke, Big Ger Cafferty and Malcolm Fox (freshly returned from Professional Standards). The Lord Advocate, Lord Minton, has been murdered and Cafferty threatened likewise with a shot through his window. Fox and Clark ask Rebus to help in the investigation which he does in his unmistakable style! I like that the character Malcolm Fox is developed more and he plays a central role in the tale.I found this an excellent read and couldn’t put it down until I had finished. The wait for book 20 in the series was worth it, despite my trepidation!

Best book yet

What could wrong the best detective rebus, sioben and Malcolm fox who we have met before all in one novel and all the well known badies cafferty for one. Rebus is back in the game as a consultant as he help sioban and Malcolm with their various assignment. I absolutely love the banter between rebus and cafferty and just all the team in general. The story line is well tied together and at the end all all makes sense. Very emotional story line mixes with great detective work by all the team and the big gang bosses go against each other to decided who will take over. Any fan off Rebus and Rankin will love this novel I I must read and highly recommend. Buy it now :)

Plodding in every sense of the word

I found this far too convoluted, so much so that I have only read part of the book. I may go back to it at some point later. I don't usually have a problem with characters and plot but there just seemed too many characters involved - and all a bit samey. The plot was the same - nothing outstanding or exciting there. Rebus was still the same likeable character and gave some relief against the others, however.I persevered but it was no pleasure so gave up.
