Post apocalyptic steampunk, not just for the "young adult" market

An incredibly imaginative series set centuries after a war that ended civilisation as we know it. Mechanised fortresses - the "predator cities" - raised from the ashes of pre-apocalypse urbanisations roam a bleak landscape in search of resources to harvest, smaller cities to cannibalise and caches of ancient technology to analyse and assimilate.The initial quartet - while aimed at the YA market - centres on characters with personalities far deeper and more complex than most adult novels tackle. There's humour, action and some very sharp social commentary in these books, and the conclusion is a lot darker than most mainstream novels.The three other books also included in this collection are prequels and show the origins of the predator cities and several other technologies featured in the first quartet.

Mortal Engines - Immortal Quality :)

I've really enjoyed reading this series and am now on the last book of the set of 7 - they are easy to read, pacy and also very clever. I love the way Reeve has subtly linked some of the names and characters and events that occur in the 'Mortal Engines' series back to the prequels of the 'Fever Crumb' series.They are not all sweet and sugary though dealing with real issues and the dark sides of the human nature too.I'm a real fantasy and sci-fi fan and regularly read Pratchett, McCaffery, Robert Jordan, and GRR Martin - this is a new addition to my portfolio now and will happily look for more of his work.
