Another excellent thriller from Jo Nesbo!

Phantom is the ninth and penultimate instalment in the Harry Hole series and following the horrific events of The Leopard, Harry again retreated to Hong Kong. After a three-year absence, Harry returns to Oslo when Oleg, the son of his former girlfriend Rakel, is arrested for murder. Although no longer a police officer, Harry conducts his own investigation in an effort to prove Oleg’s innocence.I enjoyed Phantom much more than I did The Leopard. Nesbo slows the pace down significantly in this book and I found it much more realistic. Although I’m aware from reading other reviews that the pace was a source of criticism for some. Phantom provides an excellent platform for the tenth and final novel in the series, Police, which I have no doubt will be explosive!

The most engaging of the series

The ninth Harry Hole mystery is the first one I've managed to read in the right order - I finally have the full backstory of the previous eight books, and felt that it was definitely a useful background for this plot.The book is set three years after the previous entry, during which time Harry has been absent - now he returns to Norway on a personal mission. The character is really well written and (I know I've said this before) this is probably the best book in the series.The plot is intricate and keeps you guessing, and as a reader you have a real emotional attachment to the action that some of the previous books have lacked. I have to admit though that having reached the end, I'm still not entirely clear what the resolution was. Maybe I'll find out when I get to the next book!

The Darkest Hole

Harry Hole has never been the life and soul of the party, so I did not expect a happy go lucky Hole to return from his three year sabbatical in Bangkok. What we get is Harry Hole at his most raw. The hero and anti hero rolled into one. Jo Nesbo expresses Hole`s emotions brutally and passionately, especially when dealing with his addictions and cravings, but underneath it all he is just trying to do the best for the woman and her son who mean everything to him. Unfortunately his attempts at finally getting the things that he has always wanted, a proper family life, always appear to be just a bridge too far.This is, in my opinion, the darkest of this series, but I was absorbed by every page of it.
