A strange woman; an unsatisfactory plot

The heroine of this book is strange. It's clear from the sickly references to 'my sweet little boy' (and there are several of them) that she has lost a child, but we're not told how or when. We do discover, however, that she has split from her husband, has no conception that he might be suffering the double loss of child and wife, yet she still expects him to be around when she needs him, and bitterly resents the fact that he's making an effort to come to terms with his losses. She, in the meantime, is employed by her uncle in his PI firm, is not particularly good at the job, but, as part of a new case, is to work under-cover at the homeless shelter where she already volunteers. It's interesting to note that her grandmother, another volunteer, is not half as exhausted as she herself claims to be after a day's work there. Despite seeing the hardships suffered by the homeless, she still bleats about being hard up, and the most generous thing she actually does is rescue an abandoned kitten. She's inefficient, selfish, and wimpy, and you'll have realised by now I don't like her!The plot could have been a good one, and there are some well-written descriptive passages, but the plot and the reasons behind the murders seem unlikely and the number of dead and injured out of proportion to the crime. Some of the clues were never explained, and the denouement was definitely a little rushed, and somewhat unconvincing. It may be that a better editor could have tightened up the plot. Sadly, I liked neither plot nor heroine enough to consider buying another book in the series.The Kindle edition has quite a few errors: 'it's' and 'its' appear to be interchangeable, and there are several instances of whole strings of words being run together, and even jumping out of alignment. There are tense changes mid-sentence, as well as some grammatical mistakes.

Thought the plot was too simple for me to enjoy. Prefer something a bit more gripping and complex to follow.
