3Worth buying the print book, rather than the Kindle version
By Andrew L.
A very interesting book that I made the mistake of buying in Kindle. The Kindle version wouldn't load the images, maps or family trees easily (or at all, at times), so I still haven't been able to access these on the Kindle. It was only when I found a print version I realised that the extensive and very helpful foot notes were printed below the relevant pages- rather than waiting for Kindle to load the notes and then recover from the following (all too frequent) crash. I was using Kindle in Windows 10, other devices/app may be better.Unusually for a history book, it's a bit short on dates at times; some of the chapters cover quite long time periods and I got a bit lost at times.Otherwise, a fascinating book, well written and worth buying for the beautifully written & evocative preface and epilogue alone. I'm off to buy a proper book and read it again - I think that will get 5 stars!

4Excellent. Improves our Middle East understanding
By Roddy Bailey
Excellent. The author may cast doubts on the challenge of the Christian historical narrative which is no bad thing. Sebag Montefiore argues the Slaughter of the Innocents was perhaps misread history and the census which allegedly caused Joseph & Mary to travel to Bethlehem itook place 10 years after the birth of Christ. The reader may learn that philosophers in early Palestine were numerous and many made similar claims to those of Jesus Christ. The book undoubtedly creates a good background to improve our understanding of the current issues in the Middle East.

5NORTHANGER ABBEY - WHAT A RIDE!
By Anji Dale
It's been some years since I last read Northanger Abbey and I have to say that it was never one of my favourites amongst the works of Jane Austen. That's all changed now! I totally loved it this time around. More so than any of her other works, I think, Jane Austen addresses the reader directly on numerous occasions when discussing the subjects of what makes a heroine and of reading novels. In the telling of Catherine's adventures, the author's sharp observations, sarcasm and wit are just some of the things that I just didn't appreciate when I first read this as a teenager. As a woman of somewhat more mature years now (!), it was such a delight.I guess just about everyone will know the details of the plot so I won't go into great detail here, just a few observations about some of the characters. At seventeen, Catherine Morland is around the same age as Kitty Bennet and shares some of the same silliness and immaturity with her. I found it annoying on my earlier readings but now I can understand the background to her life and upbringing. I can imagine Kitty, if she read at all, having the same love of Gothic novels. As for Henry Tilney, who wouldn't appreciate a man with a sense of humour and who understands muslin the way he does? Isabella and John Thorpe both need a good talking to. I found them both deeply annoying and self-centred. Eleanor Tilney reminded me a little of Georgiana Darcy but without having the Ramsgate experience. The two characters I still struggle to properly interpret though are the General and Captain Tilney.Anyone out there who hasn't read Northanger Abbey before, or for a long while, should take a shot at it. It was a very rewarding experience.

4More satirical than I expected
By Stephanie Jane
Persuasion was chosen as one of three group reads for January by the Proud Readers Of Great Stories group on Goodreads to which I belong. Having never actually read any Jane Austen novels before, I took this as my inspiration to try at least that one, then, when I realised that 2017 is the 200th anniversary year of Austen's death, I decided to challenge myself to read all six of her novels within the year.I think what surprised me most about Persuasion is the sharpness of Austen's eye and the frequent pretty vicious satire of her pen. I admit, based only on film and TV adaptations of her books, that I was expecting a fluffy Regency romance, but other than the societal expectation that everyone be either married or seeking to become so, the story for me was more satirical humour and a comedy of manners.Anne Elliot is a heroine with whom I could easily identify and empathise. Concerned with more intellectual pursuits that her peers and frequently overlooked, I was glad at her eventual triumph although for a time I wasn't sure in which of three directions it would be best for her to go. My favourite characters however were both terrible people, but wonderfully portrayed. Anne's younger sister, the fabulously self-centered Mary only ever understands other people as they pertain to her entertainment and her father, Walter, is probably the most vain and shallow male character I have ever read. I enjoyed several giggles at the expense of both! The aspirational snobbery of most of the characters did get a little wearing for me at times, especially as even those considered 'poor' were still way above the financial situation of most of England's population at the time - and now! I did sometimes struggle to remember all the familial connections too as the various intermarriages and resultant relationships made it difficult to always know who was being gossiped about behind their back. Overall though I am happy to say that I did enjoy my first Jane Austen novel and look forward to more. Perhaps Mansfield Park will be next?

4Loved it, a must-read book
By The Bookish Reader
This is Jane Austen's fourth novel and one of my favourites. I love the main character, she's self-centred (although not really meaning it) but adorable. Filled with her own self-importance at times but a wonderful daughter and Aunt. I felt like screaming at her and slapping her in most chapters but when the ending is lovely and made me realise just how much I cared about her. A world away from Fanny Price (see my Mansfield Park review here).Emma is twenty-one, the daughter of an important family in a small town, important to her neighbours but not much farther than that. After playing a small part in the marriage of her governess to a local merchant (or business man, I can't remember), she decides she can play match maker with her friend, Harriet. She fails, gives Harriet rubbish advice and generally makes a hash of it. The rest of the story is about a secret engagement, the plight of her poorer neighbours and some life lessons thrown in. All in all, a thoroughly lovely, escapist kind of book. The characters are wonderful, I particulary like Miss Bates (played by Sophie Thompson in the Gweneth Paltrow adaptation, which is my favourite). I thought Mr Knightley was a rather school teacherish man and I have a feeling that their relationship may not have been quite equal (I imagine him telling her off like a father rather a lot). But that's what is completely wonderful about this novel, I can imagine how the characters would react outside of the story, I feel like I know them inside out. Well done Jane.Is the plot as good as Pride and Prejudice or Sense and Sensibility? No, I think it's a whisker away from them (I'm a sucker for total romance), but still a great read (although very long).

4You might never see him but just you believe and beware when he visits on All Hallows Eve
By Inspector Gadget
I'd never heard of this book or of Norman Partridge (no relation to Alan) before coming across a display in the bookstore. I thought that the cover was just brilliant and I knew I had to get it right away. The story is about a redneck-ish town in middle America which has a horrific and surreal annual tradition. Every Halloween a Jack O'Lantern-type monster will rise from the cornfields and head for town. If he makes it to the church then he's won but with his jacket stuffed with candy and starving teenagers after him he's never quite made it that far.I must admit I had a bit of a problem with Partridge's narrative at first. The book is written in the present tense and addresses the reader personally. But after a few pages I got into it and the large chapters are so well written it comes across as some elaborate crossbreed of pulp and classic literature. It's brief and to-the-point and wastes no time on stretching itself thin. I find it ironic that there is a praising soundbite from Steven King in the first few pages. He claims that it packs more into its 170 pages than most bloated 600-page clunkers. Yeah, that's right, Steven. And who is the one who is churning out bloated 600-page clunkers? However, I still do wish it was a bit longer. I feel like there could have been a great 250-page book here rather than just a fleeting 170-page one. There is stuff in there that is begging for further description. Just who the hell are the Harvesters Guild and how does Sawtooth Jack come to life exactly?Either way, buy it and read it and like it for what it is and what it is not. There are plenty of overwritten books out there and I am glad to have finally found one that is diluted by a self-indulgent author.

4Lean, mean and totally original
By Rachel
Let's face it, horror can be a jaded old genre and if, like me you have had an addiction to the horrific that spans more than 2 decades you see some of the same stuff going round and round. But every now and then, something like Dark Harvest springs up and surprises the hell out of you. This is good stuff and like nothing I have read before. Set in a small town that is run by a mysterious 'Harvester's Guild' who won't let anybody leave, we enter the story on halloween night. Here, all young men between 16 and 18 have been penned up and starved for 5 days straight. They are unleashed on the town in the evening of halloween to hunt down 'The October Boy', a shuffling horror with a pumpkin for a head.Armed to the teeth and not above setting about each other, the boys have to capture the boy before midnight and the one who delivers the killing blow gets to leave the town and start a new life. However, the october boy is crafty and doesn't exactly want to be killed off. Although the odds are stacked against him, if he can manage to sneak across town and reach the old church before midnight, he wins. And so starts a stalk and slash and race against time. humans revert to monsters and the monster may just be the most humane of them all. set aside some time to read this in one sitting. its a doozy and there is no wonder this won the covetted Bram Stoker award in 2006. Partridge is a rare new talent.

4An exhilarating read
By lust_and_lunacy
I was looking for a good horror story to read after immersing myself in the dark world of H.P Lovecraft and stumbled across Dark Harvest. The premise is a town where every Halloween a creature called the October Boy has to make its way from the cornfields to the church whilst being hunted down by the young men of the town. Whoever kills the creature is allowed to leave the town and never look back, a luxury not granted to any of the town's other inhabitants. The story follows several characters including 16 year old Pete McCormick, the head of the Harvesters Guild and even the October Boy himself. I read the book in a day as I couldn't put it down, for anyone looking for a short but scary story look no further.

5Prose that takes wing
By Alun Williams
St Exupéry is best known for "Le Petit Prince" but wrote several superb books for adults. This shortish memoir of his time as a pilot in North Africa from 1926, published in 1939, is perhaps the most beautifully written of his books, a secular hymn to the desert and the people who live there (though with several stories from South America thrown in for good measure). Well over two million copies have sold in France alone. This is one of the rare French books which I find myself translating into English as I read - not because the language is difficult - but because it is so perfect that I want to understand how one might achieve a similar effect in English. St Exupéry's writing has a nobility about it, a sometimes almost biblical quality that is outstanding, yet he is also humbled by the vastness of the territory he flies over, and the fragility of his life - dependent as it is on the aircraft of the time. There are many wonderful passages in this book. To mention just three - a description of a night spent in a half-ruined house where there is a little girl who is very hard to impress, the story of a slave whom he and his companions buy from his owners and restore to freedom, and a marvellous description of the impact of the "slow shower of fire" of meteorites on a desert plateau.

4The beauty of being human...
By serenitysil
A wonderful, very "human" book. Written from the heart it offers many beautifully captured moments of deep connection. I love the honest, wise and generously warm perspective that Saint Exupery always brings in his books. This is one of those books I like to go back to once in a while because it reminds me of the beauty of being human.

5A very satisfying Read
By Infoholic
This book's chatty style guides the reader through the evolution of punctuation as used in English. There was something deeply satisfying about seeing a snapshot of the roles performed by each punctuation mark in turn. It's also been fascinating to muse on how two new developments have changed the state of the written word since the 2007 edition: the launch of Kindle and other mobile devices (which are extending the "swansong" of the book as a medium), and the rapid decline in text speak due to "unlimited text" tariffs and predictive testicles lol

3Eats ... and leaves
By david h kinnon
Not sure why this is cropping up for review so long after purchase. Reasonably good commentary on punctation and the need for accuracy, but peters out rather than stays consistently strong. Readable and forgettable

5Informative and hilarious
By Jane Anderson
This is a very entertaining read about grammar, for readers who quail every time they see misplaced apostrophes, incorrectly applied commas, or overused exclamation marks. Great read, with a lot of useful punctuation advice too!

5An Absolute Classic
By N. W. Williams
Firstly the quality of this book is unreal, so much attention has been spent on the details.I only ever thought there was one Peter Pan story ie. Disneys, but found the book has within its pages several versions of the classic tale with Disney's only being one of them.Hidden amongst the pages are treats for the imagination in the form of little fold out maps, pull tabs and picture wheels not to mention the old school library card within the first few pages. This would make a great bedtime story book, it looks great on the shelf and I can only see it go up in value over the years to come.Enjoy

5a very special book
By vicky
I'm really bad at remembering to leave reviews for things but i just had to for this book. I bought it as a 1st birthday keepsake present for my son. I couldn't be happier its is beautifully illustrated and contains interactive pages making it such a special book to have. I literally couldn't be more pleased with it and got a bit emotional writing our message to our son in it. i just hope he treasures it as much as i already do.

4Worth a Read!
By Jo's Booktastic Books
(WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS)Peter Pan In Kensington Gardens is the prequel to Peter & Wendy, it is about a seven day old baby boy called Peter who fly's out of his nursery window to the bird island in Kensington Gardens, to be with the birds because he still remembers being a bird himself. Peter then decides he wants to leave the island to go and play with the other children in the gardens, but he can't cross the river because he can no longer fly as he has realised he is a boy not a bird. The birds make him a nest that floats on the water that Peter uses as a boat. While in the gardens Peter visits the fairies who give him two wishes. He use his first wish to visit his mother, so he fly's back to his nursery to find that it hasn't changed, his crib is still where he left it and his clothes are still in the drawers as they had always been. His mother is asleep on the bed in the nursery, she is still exactly the same as he remembered her. He then returns to the fairies, keeping his other wish until he ready to use it, he tells them he is going to stay with them for a while before returning to his mother for good. A few months later when Peter decides it is time for him to return home, the fairies grant his final wish an he fly's back to his nursery only to find bars on the window and another little boy in his mothers arms. So he returns to the garden angry and full of hatred for his mother. I thought that this book was quite good, it gives us a good insight of why Peter Pan doesn't have a mother, and why he seems to dislike the idea of mother's in general. Although it didn't explain how he gets to Neverland, which was a bit disappointing, it was still a good introduction to Peter's world. I liked the symbolism in this book, especially the idea of baby's once being birds, I think this was quite clever because of the story of the stork bringing babies to their mothers. My favourite part of the book is when Peter goes to visit to his mother, and finds her asleep on the bed just the way he remembered her. While watching her, Peter wants to curl up in the crook her of arm just like he used to, this is when he decides that he will return to her for good one day. I like this part because it shows that Peter once was capable of love, and he realises that his mother does miss him, but unfortunately he thinks that his mother will always wait for him forever.Overall, I think this book is really good, if you can cope with the dated writing and a lot of symbolism. I would recommend this book to others who want to know more of Peters story, but I wouldn't recommend it for children as it is very confusing at times, my eight year old who I read it with didn't really understand very much of it.

4Almost like we'll go through the story
By K
Definitely a page-turner. Fascinating world building, but the pacing is a little strange and the 'climax' and ending seems rushed, almost seemingly out of nowhere. For me, it makes me just want to turn back the pages an go back to read about this fascinating world instead of going on with story. The romance factor, oh my, sparks definitely flutter off the pages. The chemistry between the characters were believable and genuine. Yet at the same time, it's pacing is a bit uneven so it clashes with the rest of the story telling. Almost like we'll go through the story, but we're going to slow down and notice every tiny minuscule details when it in regards to the romance between the main character and her intended. The end result felt a bit disjointed, felt like we're almost intruding on them (or peeping at them from a hole in the wall - your choice)I would have like a bit more time to see the characters grow before things 'got to the point of no return' but that's my own personal preference. Overall, an engaging read.

5Groups, Motifs and team dynamics
By Tracey Madeley
Like Brave New World this novel deals with different groups (Abegnation, Dauntless, Erudite, Candor & Amity), which contribute to societies functions. Every group has its distinctive motifs, dress and colour. They represent the different sides of human nature taken to the extreme. Abegnatin are the selfless faction where Beatrice is born and the fact that she is divergent, not fitting neatly into any one faction, just highlights how complex human beings are.The induction creates the values and behaviours necessary to reinforce group mentality. Those who do not succeed, or conform, are factionless. This is portrayed as a fate worse than death, as they live outside the bounds of a civilised society. Again a little like Brave New World, a place outside of the compound filled with savages. It is interesting that the author has chosen 16 years of age as the time of choice. An age in the UK where students finish compulsory education. A stage which they are also still pliable and open to new ideas and influences.Like most YA novels it is written in the first person from Beatrice’s point of view and it is though her interactions that we learn about the rest of the characters. We learn a lot about Peter through his shocking behaviour and the way he treats Beatrice. Equally we love and respect Four for his ability as a leader and his care and respect for Beatrice. Four’s role is also contrasted with Eric and we discover that Four is the more able despite Eric’s seniority and obvious resentment. This book is a great example of groups, motifs and team dynamics and how these are woven together. The first person narrative, like the Hunger Games, is relational and exposes the other characters through their words and actions. I look forward to reading the rest of the books in the series.InsurgentDivergent ends with Tris thinking of life beyond a faction, yet insurgent is so much more than this. She still clings to Dauntless as her faction of choice, but she also has to recognise that she is divergent with all the risks associated with this.We discover much more about the other factions in this book, starting with Amity, where they flee to first. Erudite by their nature hold the knowledge of all the faction as well as a secret they would prefer to see destroyed than fall into the wrong hands. It is this secret that drives the story forward as individuals set aside their factions to work together. The reader also sees the strain this puts on Tris and Tobias’s relationship as he works with this father and is reconciled to his mother. The divergent are much more important in this book than the previous one and we learn that there are more members of this group than Tris may have imagined. They are certainly a target for the Erudite and their Dauntless allies. From a political perspective they are the people who think across party lines. This can also be seen in the way Dauntless splits with some siding with Erudite, most notably Eric and those who don’t. Even peace loving, neutral Amity suffers a crisis amongst its members with some needing to fight rather than stay neutral. As the title suggests there is more fighting, violence and torture in this book, but I love the ending. The idea that the divergent are the future and that factions were only a temporary solution to restore order from chaos. I look forward to reading the next book.

4An awful lot of fun
By Dr. Michael Heron
Divergent is an enjoyable YA thriller. It's uncomplicated, unsophisticated, but chock full of enthusiasm and energy. It lacks the relative complexity of the Hunger Games (which it is obviously modelled upon) but even given the simplicity of the morality within it's a lot of fun to read. In many ways it makes me think of it as 'Uglies done right' - I really didn't like Uglies, which I thought had a lazy premise and a paper thin premise. But it had some interesting bones that a more competent execution could have built upon - Divergent really seems like it fills that niche. The factional system of Divergent is at least moderately believable, even if it lacks the geopolitical nuance of the Hunger Games. The characters are like-able, even though the villains don't get much in the way of characterisation beyond 'look how mean they are'. The story is - well, it's okay. It's much like Full Metal Jacket in that it's very much a book of two halves, and the second half doesn't come remotely close to the quality of the first. But I didn't resent a second I spent reading it, and I'll happily move on to the next one before too much time has passed.
