Pollyanna, by Eleanor H. Porter
By Mr. J. P. Henstock
Pollyanna is a really excellent book. It begins when this appealing young girl comes to live at her Aunt Polly's house. Aunt Polly is only taking her because it is her duty - she doesn't really want a lively 11 year old. Although the house is full of empty, well-furnished rooms, Aunt Polly gives Pollyanna a bleak attic as a bedroom. But Pollyanna has been taught by her father (who has died) to find something to be glad about in everything - the "glad game"! Every time Aunt Polly tries to punish her, Pollyanna regards it as a special treat! Soon the whole town knows this joyful little girl. Read about how she visits a cantankerous invalid and changes her - About how she makes friends with a recluse who won't speak to anyone - how she helps a young orphan boy to find a home - how she encourages her discouraged local minister! In the end she even changes her Aunt Polly - and helps to reunite her with the man who loves her! There are lots of great episodes in the book - and funny ones too! But then Pollyanna has an awful accident. Will she be paralysed for life? How can she be glad then?

Pollyanna Grows Up, by Eleanor H. Porter.
By Mr. J. P. Henstock
Pollyanna has fully recovered from the spinal injury she received in "Pollyanna", and is sent to stay with a woman in Boston who is hurt and very bitter. She needs a dose of Pollyanna! Pollyanna does help her in her own unique way! She helps a lame boy too - a boy who just might be Mrs. Carew's missing grandchild. . . .The years pass. Pollyanna does grow up. And tragedy strikes Aunt Polly. Pollyanna has to seek to comfort Aunt Polly - and to keep playing the Glad Game herself! Then there is another complication. Jimmy Bean has grown up too, and so has Jamie, the lame boy. It looks like both want Pollyanna to be theirs! What is going to happen? This book is an excellent sequel to "Pollyanna", about a unique, lovable young girl who has taught herself to find things to be glad about, whatever happens - and who by her example helps others too.

childhood revisited
By Moonlit
One of the thrills of having a Kindle is the ability to download old childhood favourites for free. This is one I hadn't read and to be honest one which I probably wouldn't have bothered with if it hadn't been free. But it was and I enjoyed it. It is unfortunately very similar to the prequel, Pollyanna. As in Pollyanna there is a crotchety middle aged woman for Pollyanna to win over and similarly there is an orphan boy, Jamie this time rather than Jimmy, to be found a home. One gets the feeling that the author didn't have a great pool of plots from which to fish. That said, this is entertaining and worth reading if you're a fan of the original or of the Anne of Green Gables series. And it costs nothing!
