At her best, she was brilliant
By Susannah B (SusieB)
Katherine Mansfield has deservedly attained the reputation as one of the most talented writers of the modern short story - which considering she lived until she was only thirty-four years old, is no mean feat and, although (due to illness and other difficulties), some of her output was of varying quality, at her best, she was brilliant. She was a perceptive, witty and innovative writer whose effective use of the stream of consciousness style narrative enabled her to reveal the vulnerabilities and complexities of her characters and of their inner lives. Like Virginia Woolf (who was rather envious of Mansfield's writing) Katherine Mansfield focused not so much on what happened to her characters, but on how those characters felt and, through her lyrical prose, she was able to convey her characters' thoughts and inner imaginings particularly well. This Penguin Modern Classics edition (my copy has the lovely cover art of 'Interior with Housemaid' by Vanessa Bell) contains fifteen stories which, apart from one of her most well-known stories 'The Garden Party' also includes the richly descriptive 'At the Bay' - one of Mansfield's longest short stories, set in a seaside town in New Zealand, where several families are holidaying together; there is the marvellous (and one of my particular favourites) 'The Daughters of the Late Colonel' which focuses on two spinster sisters, whose overbearing father has recently died, but whose presence is still very much felt by the poor, timid siblings; then there is the very poignant 'Ma Parker' where we learn about the sad and very hard life of a self-centred young man's cleaning lady. Also included is 'Marriage a la Mode' about the unhappy marriage of William and the lovely Isabel; the marvellous and beautifully described 'Miss Brill' (another personal favourite) about an ageing spinster who overhears a conversation which spoils what was, until that point, a beautiful and promising day; 'The Voyage' where we meet a young Fenella Crane, who after the death of her mother is sent to stay with her grandparents on South Island, New Zealand, and who worries that she will going away from her father forever; and the entertaining 'Singing Lesson' where a music teacher feels her future life has ended when her fiancé sends her an extremely thoughtless letter.I enjoyed all of the stories in this collection - some more than others (the ones mentioned above are my personal favourites) but they are all very good, if not excellent, examples of the art of short story writing and although I have read these stories more than once over the years, I often return to them when I have a few moments to spare, but not enough time to become involved in a full-length novel. Just one final comment - if you are thinking of downloading the free Kindle edition, it might be worth you spending just a little more and downloading this edition:'Delphi Complete Works of Katherine Mansfield (Illustrated)' - which contains not just the complete short stories, but also includes Katherine Mansfield's poetry and her non-fiction works, including her marvellous journal.5 Stars.

The Chopin of short stories
By Dolores
Here is the Chopin of short stories, all mood and personality, atmosphere and impressions. The reader makes his or her own interpretation. Many short stories are all snappy plot and the obligatory surprise twist at the end. Do not necessarily expect this with Mansfield. The pleasure of reading her is that she has a keen eye for observation, a sharp wit and an acerbic pen (probably when alive an acerbic tongue too!). These are vignettes of people and social ways closely observed, their moods as fleeting as the clouds that pass over their heads. It is so unfair to compare her adversely to Chekov, as she died 10 years earlier than he did so had less time to mature and develop. The downside is that her language and references can seem dated, for example when mentioning class issues of her time, but the same can be said of many writers who describe social issues, such as Dickens. I read these stories while staying in New Zealand, shortly after visiting the Mansfield house museum in Thorndon, Wellington, which I would also strongly recommend to any Mansfield reader who might be in the area.

Beautifully observed and told
By Sarah Hague
An absolute treasure trove of short stories. The social observations are sharp, especially regarding the tragedy of the human condition. I think my favourite was the music lesson where a devastated music teacher conveyed her tormented soul to her pupils and they responded in kind in their singing, devastating them in the process.Such brilliant writing was a joy to read.
