4the plots thicken
By Lynn B
I have been reading the whole series, starting with The White Queen, which I read when it first came out.But then i read then the others in different order. I find that the books stand alone, although I kept referring back to the [useful] family tree showing the relationships and dates. The map was useful also. The thread running through these novels is the poignancy and utter powerlessness of the females of noble birth whose lives are never their own, and yet who find their place and are forced to accept poor treatment and make the best of it. Marriage and the necessity to produce male heirs give the central meaning to their lives. Their usefulness is derived from their fecundity. They learn to play a secret hand, and their influence on matters of state is often profound, yet never overt. Gregory illustrates this with her usual insight. The ambition and ruthless use of his daughters by Anne's father is shocking to modern sensibilities. The powerless girls accept from childhood that they are to be married off for gain. Surely not? I asked myself as marriage after marriage is plotted by the parents. The coldness of the mother, standing by as her daughters are traded, is chilling. Yet history bears out that these young women, and many like them were indeed treated like chattels for bargaining. Again, this is well drawn by Gregory. As is the ambivalence around Richard and his courtship of Anne. Was it just for gain, or was his love genuine? And the relationship is shown as changing, as relationships will. Richard appears in all the books as a complex character, to whom history does little justice, once the Tudor propaganda machine was underway.Power corrupts, and the madness driving these men to seize total power is barely understandable in this age. Yet Gregory takes the facts and weaves characters around them; some very unpleasant and devious characters, as well as innocents. The heroine's descent is both poignant and telling... her hatred of 'the York witch' and her gilded family runs like a seam of poison through the book. Bitterness and loss haunt Anne to her death.Gregory has kept me consistently interested in this period, about which I knew nothing, snoozing as I did through the Wars of the Roses at school. They were fascinating times. Reading this series has led me to read around the characters and do some of my own research. If a novel can prompt such interest in history, then well done Gregory! I would have given 5 stars if the novel had tied itself to the rest of Europe, and the Renaissance of cultural life which was blossoming abroad. Though that would have lengthened the work. I feel that, to be utterly perfect, she could have brought in some of the cultural life of 15th century Europe, rather than only the political. The novelist's dilemma... where do you draw the line?
