I quite enjoyed reading the book
By Customer
I recently read the 'Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde' book which was retold by Pauline Francis. This book is an integral part of the AQA English GCSE so I thought I'd borrow it from my local library and check it out. The story is very short and I managed to finish it in one day. I quite enjoyed reading the book. Having watched the film prior to reading the book, I sort of knew what to expect but the book and the film were actually quite different. The book was a nice easy read and seems to be aimed at younger audiences. The book is a classic. I liked the small illustrations in the book too. If you are looking for a book that's quick and easy to read, look no further! If this review was helpful, please click the thumbs up button - it really helps me out! :)

Easy, influential classic that is a thrill to read
By williamcani
This book is quite a rarity, in its ability to simultaneously appeal to younger readers whilst still reserving classic status. This is primarily because, it is easy to finish within a day and as a horror story, it is quite entertaining. Like many gothic novels of this era, it is epistolary (told via the medium of letters or diary entries) and lacks direct descriptions of the action; whilst this allows for the building of intrigue, most contemporary readers would struggle to regard this as a horror. The plot surrounds a strange, remorseless, ‘other’ creature by the name of Mr. Hyde, doing horrendous things, whilst Mr. Utterson and his coworkers and peers try to solve the mystery of Jekyll’s (their close friend) absence and illness. As most potential readers probably know (given the fact the phrase "Jekyll and Hyde" is now synonymous with a person whose moral character varies from one situation to the next) this novel explores the dual nature of mankind and our hidden, base and evil aspects. My only criticism would be that this novel’s reputation exceeds it, so very few readers will embark upon the story without a sense of how it works out, although the way the characters themselves respond to the unfolding events creates allure in itself. Jekyll’s lack of hatred towards the abhorrent Hyde, resonates with many readers, as we ourselves often succumb to dark thoughts, and consider challenging our moral constraints. The free kindle book makes this an extremely worthwhile purchase, especially as it enables you to knock off a classic for free and within a day. However, the paperback copy pictured is distinctly kiddish, in terms of the very large and very thin book size complete with pictures and very large font size – felt slightly embarrassed reading it on the train! If you found this review helpful, please do rate it as helpful – really helps me out! :)

A beautifully written classic
By Syo Kennex
RatingPersonally, I rate The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde a 4.5/5 stars.GenreThis book is advertised as horror, but it’s more mystery. It’s also a firm classic within today’s literary standards.About the BookJekyll and Hyde is a book about a strange creature by the name of Mr. Hyde, doing horrendous things, and Mr. Utterson and his coworkers and peers trying to figure it out and aiding the police, whilst trying to solve the mystery of their close friend, Jekyll, being absent so much and so ill.Why did I choose this book to read?I decided to read The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde because I’ve always wanted to read more classics and I’ve always been a fan of horror. Coming across Jekyll and Hyde was a blessing; a short, horror classic? It was the perfect pick for me to read on my morning college bus – which turned into me reading it everywhere I went, even around the supermarket.PricingI managed to pick up a copy of this for free on the Kindle eBook store, and have noted there are a few different versions of the book on there, all for free. What did I think of it?I think that Jekyll and Hyde is definitely one of the best classics I’ve read. I admit to not having read much classic literature, only poetry and not novels, but this is definitely high up. I would even dare to say it’s one of the best books I’ve ever read. Stevenson creates an amazing mysterious atmosphere – although, we all know the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde now, and we all know how it turns out – it’s still a mystery. You’re shown how the characters themselves deal with it and it makes you rethink, makes you wonder and it keeps you gripped. The description within this book was wonderful. I truly felt like I was back in Victorian London, frowning deeply and trying to discover the heinous creature known as Hyde. Stevenson paints a picture in your head, he really does, and it’s easy to close your eyes and see what he wants you to see.The characters felt quite developed, and quite three dimensional. They were weakly three dimensional, but it was still there. I felt like I could connect with Mr. Utterson, and was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to like so many of the characters. The ending struck me as a surprise. I understand that authors like to explain everything at the end and within the last chapter, but Stevenson goes on to write an entire monologue of Jekyll and everything that happened. I’ve never seen this before within a book – if I have, I definitely don’t remember it. I find it to be quite insightful, actually. I really enjoyed being able to read it all from Jekyll’s point of view and to understand what he was going through and to understand his actions behind everything. It was well done, well written, and a really good way to update the reader before the book ends, and left me with no questions. All in all, this is a really well written classic, and I can’t wait to sit down and read it again. I was actually heart broken when I realised I had gotten to 98% and only had a few swipes of my phone screen left of this wonderful story.Did I have any qualms with it?The only qualms I had with this book can’t quite be considered qualms. I found it difficult to follow at times due to the language used, but that can’t be complained about, considering the timing this book was written. Maybe a rewrite in newer years would have read better for me, but the original is always the best to read, no?Would I recommend it and who to?I would recommend this to any classic book lover, and as an introductory book to anyone who wants to start reading classics. To horror fans, I wouldn’t recommend as much. Although it has the genre of horror, it’s much more mystery, like a Sherlock Holmes book more than something terrifying like today’s horror.Overall opinionI definitely enjoyed this book and it is certainly one of those I can read again with ease. Especially now that I have the words I didn’t know previously highlighted, and it’s easier to read through knowing which words I didn’t understand before, and, hopefully, un-highlighting them as I slip through the book with ease.
