A great master of chess
By Dr. Glynn E. Jenkins
Bird was one of the great chess players of a golden age; long-lived, his dashing style was described as 'Either dangerously good or dangerously bad.' He competed in the first International Chess Tournament of 1851 and was still playing at the end of the century. That said, this book was a great disappointment. Either the original is muddled and lacking in focus, or the transfer to Kindle format has damaged the original outline of the book. There seems to be no logic in the sequence of chapters and we lurch backwards and forwards, seemingly at random. If this is due to poor formatting, it is a great pity as Bird is acknowledged one of the important early writers on chess. I hope the editors will take another look at the work and see what can be done to correct mistakes.

C19th and quirky but still interesting if you like reading about chess
By Ian C.M.
This C19th work is by a former British player and competitor at international tournaments. It has some of the dated 'quirks' of its era: over-long preface; and 'contents' in capital letters that covers five pages. But the work is free in the public domain and has some interest. If taken as one source and read critically, it still has the early history of chess in this country and the origins stated to be in India. There are interesting asides on the Arabic 'schach matt', the king is dead, the supposed origin of our 'checkmate'.Of course, improving observations are recorded: 'a man that plays chess is not likely to play 'penny nap' nor to drink much four ale'.And in 1787 it was noted by the Hon.Daines Barrington that 'twenty-six English families have emblazoned chess boards and chess rooks on their arms.'If you like reading about chess, this has its place in your electronic library.

Two Stars
By Philip Nendick
Only for chess history enthusiasts. No actual chess to make it more readable.
