Not as focused as the first book
By Emilia Stalaza
The second book in the series is not as focused as the first. The characters are still realistic, and changing with the experiences they've faced and find themselves facing. The magic system is still interesting. In fact, we learn about even more areas of it. The stakes are still very high - with the possibility of hundreds and thousands of people dying in large-scale battles. Religions are even twisted around and reinterpreted, with mystical forces behind them. All of this is great fantasy. What I disliked was that the number of monotonous and very technical battles increased. These fights didn't add to the plot in any meaningful way and, though carefully choreographed and thought through in terms of the magic system, they weren't interesting. As large swathes of the book were dedicated to these meaningless, blow-by-blow spars and siege political discussions, I found myself less swept away in the tale than the first book and more hoping I would finally get to some action. This apathy wasn't helped when a traitor is known to be in the midst of the group and yet the main character continually fails to do anything about it. She'll 'check' one person one month, then another the next. This should be her top priority! Yet, I didn't see any reason given for why she wasn't fulfilling this responsibility. As a result, some of the consequences of this decision failed to move me as much as they could have and made me feel that the book was padded out. Also, there's a love triangle. It felt completely out of place in the otherwise serious tone of the book, and it was pointless. Insecure girl - check. Stupid boy - check. Arrogant genius - check. Great for a romance novel. Here - not so much. It added to the padding issue and was probably included to make the long siege segment more interesting. Didn't work out that way for me.Overall, I think the story was saved by the last fifth of the book. This is where the action really heats up and every chapter has something going on in terms of the core plot. I will still be reading the third book as I felt that many new possibilities are open to be explored and a great adversary must be met. I hope to see less filler in the finale.

Very enjoyable sequel that takes a little bit to get going.

The Well of Ascension is the second book in the Mistborn fantasy series. If you haven't read the first book (The Final Empire: Mistborn Book One) then I highly recommend you read that first as it is one continuous story.Onto the actual review, Well of Ascension focuses on the aftermath of the Final Empire being overthrown with Vin, Elend and the rest of Kelsier's former thieving crew discovering that trying to run Luthadel is almost as hard as trying to overthrow it. The story is at first pretty slow going with Luthadel being under siege in a sort of Mexican stand off scenario between several armies seeking to take it. Brandon Sanderson takes this time to both expand on some of the world's lore as well as invest in a lot more character finding out more about Vin's continuing insecurities as well as really fleshing out Elend Venture into a prominent character rather than the lesser role he had in the first book. Plenty of the side characters also get a lost more attention such as the Keeper Sazed and the Kandra Ore'seur who I both really liked. Many of these moments are very good and the characters are one of the parts of this series I like most but it does make sections of the book drag out a little at first, especially the moments focusing on Vin and Elend's relationship which was a little too teen angst for my personal taste.Despite that Well of Ascension still has some great action moments especially towards the end. The action is exciting and over the top with some really imaginitive scenarios and fights. This is largely due to the magic systems of allomancy and feruchemy he uses which are some of the best I have ever read. Vin does seem a little overpowered though at times but honestly I like those moments quite a lot.All in all I like this book quite a bit despite some pacing problems with the story. It's not quite as good as the first in the series but it's still a very well written and creative adventure with interesting lore and characters more than worth your time.Recommended.+ Characters and lore get expanded.+ Action is fantastic.+ Love the magic system.- A little slow in places.- The teenage romance angst went on far too long.

Siege of the Heart and Soul
By J. Ang
Book 2 of the phenomenally successful Mistborn series finds our street urchin-turned-powerful Mistborn facing even more challenges as she not only navigates her evolving relationship with Elend (enter dark love rival who is literally Elend’s dark opposite), and the possible destiny that awaits her as the prophesied hero of the ages.Elend is trying on his role as king of Luthadel, even as his corrupt father Straff tries to wrest it from him, and Elend soon finds the threat comes not just from that quarter. For much of the book, the city of Luthadel is under siege, and the action flags just a little from this impasse, which is not insubstantial, considering it is more than 750 pages in length. But given the pattern of 2nd books in trilogies, which act like the exposition section of an epic-length novel, it is not too surprising. To be fair, there is much political intrigue and sabotage to occupy the reader, as all sides try to outwit one another. The reader learns a lot more about Vin’s character from her inner struggles, and the Terrisman Sazed, who was Kelsier’s steward in the first book, also plays a significant part in this second book, and his story arc moved me the most, more so than the at times cloying romance between Elend and Vin, who are after all, very young lovers. The kandra Oresur, who played Uncle Renoux to Vin’s Valette in the first book, now inhabits an animal, and surprisingly, that is where his humanity shines through, and the conflicting relationship he has with Vin was especially well executed, although it gets lost in the later events of the novel. An overall engaging enough novel that makes you want to see how Sanderson eventually ties up all the loose ends and the fates of the huge ensemble cast in the final book.
