Excellent, another meticulously researched history from Ian Pringle.
By Jason Woodman
On ascending to office in 1979 Margaret Thatcher said of the Patriotic Front, the name for the imaginary coalition between Robert Mugabe's ZANLA and Joshua Nkomo's ZIPRA, ' They're terrorists, just like the IRA'. Although there is an old adage about 'one man's freedom fighter being another man's terrorist' it is difficult to see how the downing by ZIPRA of the Viscount Hunyani and the murder of the injured and traumatised survivors on the ground including women and a little girl was anything other than an act of terror in a war that took terror to new heights. Indeed Mugabe himself always stated that the aim of ZANLA was to terrorise white farmers into leaving the land and abandoning their farms, farms which when later confiscated and occupied by black so called 'veterans' of the conflict have failed due to poor land management, ultimate disinterest and outright incompetence.Ian Pringle has followed on from his hugely successful 'Dingo Firestorm' and produced a meticulously researched history of the Viscount atrocities and the Rhodesian military response that followed. Drawing on no less than thirty two persoanl interviews he conducted starting with the late General Peter Walls and Air Commodore Norman Walsh when writing Dingo Firestorm as well as survivors from the Hunyani and participants in Operation Gatling itself. Pringle's scholarship is impeccable, as a fixed and rotary wing flyer himself he took time and trouble to learn the handling characteristics of the Viscount airliner so he could produce a minute by minute account of the final flight of the Hunyani and the truly heroic attempts by the desperate pilots to save the aircraft after it was struck by a SAM-7 Strella fired by a squad of ZIPRA terrorists who deliberately targetted the aircraft as a civilian airliner in a policy endorsed and promoted by Nkomo. The account of the last hours of the passengers and crew is heartbreaking as Pringle reminds us these were real people with their own life stories and one is left humbled by the words of John da Costa Anglican Dean of Salisbury in 1978 when at the memorial service he described the absence of official criticism from Britain and the United Stated of ZIPRA's actions with the memorable phrase' the silence is deafening'.Pringle follows his account of the downing of Hunyani with a detailed examination of the plan for Operation Gatling and the attacks themselves on the ZIPRA bases at Westlands Farm, Mkushi and CGT complexes in Zambia where the air assets were led by Squadron Leader Chris Dixon flying his English Electric Canberra B2 bomber as 'Green Leader', hence the title for the current book. Students of the Rhodesian Bush War will know of the famous exchange between Chris Dixon and air traffic control at Lusaka while the raid was going in recorded by Chris Dixon's navigator/bomb aimer Mike Ronne for posterity at the time on an ordinary cassette tape in the cockpit. You can listen to the whole exchange on YouTube including the bombing run itself and the run-in, really fascinating stuff once you understand the detail behind what is happening as you now can with Ian Pringle's narrative.Pringle concludes his book with an analysis of the downing of the second Viscount Umniati, again brought down by ZIPRA with a SAM-7 although this time sadly with no survivors, and a description of Operation Vanity a truly audacious air asset only assault on ZIPRA targets in Angola. Personally I would have liked a little more detail on Op Vanity mainly because it was probably the most technically difficult bombing raid mounted by the Canberras of 5 Squadron RhAF throughout the whole of the Bush War. For this raid, intended to show ZIPRA and those nations hosting them that there really was no hiding place on the African continent from the Rhodesian armed forces, the Canberras were flown at the very limit of their range through hostile air space all the way to the target and back. So far away was the target in Angola that it could only be safely reached by the Rhodesian (and South African) pilots cutting their engines and flying at high altitude on one engine to the target to conserve fuel, before descending right down to three hundred feet for the bomb run - now that takes nerve!!In preparing for his book Pringle even practiced the precise attack profile for the Hawker Hunter fighter bombers flown during the raids in his own Hunter so he could better understand how the Rhodesian pilots he had interviewed approached their targets. It is this attention to detail coupled with his never missed interest in the human element of military history that make him a truly excellent writer. Ian Pringle might not be Cornelius Ryan but he's certainly heading that way if he produces more books like this.Well done.

An excellent book which sets the history books straight.

A brilliant book, an absolute Must Read especially for those of us who were in the Rhodesian Forces at the time but not directly involved in Op Gatling. The Preface describing the decolonisation history of Africa is the most informative account of this period which I have read anywhere. Ian's description of the Viscount episode is stark, moving and very graphic. A grim reminder of the horrors of the conflict, particularly so for the relatives of those who perished and those of us who lost friends in the disaster. The main body of the book describes the main people, the equipment and aircraft, the preparation and execution of the raids, in minute and fascinating detail. Many excellent photographs complete an exceedingly well produced book. In the appendix there are copies of many documents regarding the raid and also the communications with the British Government at the time of the final election.Buy it read it and understand much more about the Rhodesian conflict.

I ordered this not knowing much about the Bush War or the Viscount Tragedy but by the end I felt almost connected to the people involved from start to the finish, begining with Operation Gaitling and ending with the demise of Rhodesia and the rise of Zimbabwe. The first 1/3 of the book (roughly) covers the Viscount tragedy itself and introduces those on board, there is a lot of background. While some of the details are not quite essential to the narrative, they are none-the-less quite interesting. A lot of this part of the book really characterizes the victims of the RH825, rather than them being just a number or statistic. Some of the specific details are very moving and occasional quite poignant. The sets up the chain of events that follow, with Operation Gaitling as the main focus, but also a lot about the people involved (on both sides of the conflict) as well as the political process behind it. The latter part would be of interest to readers who are interested in the Cold War's effect on the African continent and sheds some light on two of the bigger players involved; Joshua Nkomo and Robert Mugabe. The book also touches upon the concept and execution of the Fireforce vertical envelopment strategy and key witness on the ground give their accounts of it in action, though there is a lot more talk of the story behind the scenes, namely the story of Green Leader and the pilots involved who, despite all the odds, manage to execute an operation flawless, on-par with the Six Day War.This is a well written and informative book and I highly enjoyed the read and couldn't put it down. If you wanted to know how the end of Rhodesia started, this is the book to read.
