Maybe this translates better on stage
By Lel
Most people have a basic understanding of the Phantom of the Opera. There is a stage performer called Christine that is haunted by the disfigured phantom that lives beneath the opera theater.Maybe this translates better on stage, I certainly hear great things about the west end show. The book however just got my annoyed. Christine I feel was a vapid easily led drip of a girl that just does whats shes told. The Phantom is probably the most interesting character and even he is completely fickle and flies from one extreme to another. And please don't get me started on Raoul!I did like the style of the book, the action that kept the story moving and the fact that it started live as a serial story in a newspaper. But for me the characters just brought the story down. Whether that be due to expectations that I had or just I have no tolerance for people that flit backwards and forwards with their opinions and actions I don't know. All I know is it hasn't made me rush out to buy tickets to a performance.

Err, it's the Phantom of the Opera...here, inside your internet......
By TheChronicCook
This really doesn't require a critical review from me. It's about a phantom (who is not a phantom) and lives in an opera and letches on this lass. come to think of it, the PC brigade would have a field day. Disabled dude with severe facial disfigurations is harassed so much he has to live underground in a Parisian opera house (if the council found out in the UK, they'd be bloody having him for council tax evasion). For all his faults though, the dude does like his music.

A haunting tale of one genius, penned by another
By Emily Scotcher
A captivating tale from the pen of Leroux, the Phantom's story transcends time and circumstance, speaking to all who have ever felt loneliness, to all who have ever felt unrequited love and to all who have felt misunderstood or ostracised for falling outside of society's definition of 'normal'.The haunting story of the musical genius who falls in love with a young soprano, Christine Daae, and tries to win her from her childhood sweetheart, Raoul, is perhaps best known these days in its musical format, and, when you read this book, you can see why it has inspired so many adaptations over the years. For fans of Lloyd Webber's show, reading the inspiration behind it only serves to heighten the poignancy of the music, and occasionally you will spot the odd recognisable lyric between the pages. Once you've read it, you will never see the show in the same way again. This is a gorgeous translation...but for a really striking read, those who can, take a look at it in French.
