Computer Genius is a Bad Dad

This is a tricky one. Steve Jobs and Chrisann Brennan were high school sweethearts in the heady, hippy days of the early 1970s in California. Their very tumultuous, on-again off-again relationship endured and evolved over his entire life and produced a daughter, Lisa, whom Jobs refused to acknowledge for many years. Brennan's memoir tells the story of their romance and her battle to force Jobs to accept his paternity and provide Lisa with some financial support. It is well known that Jobs was a difficult character in the working environment, but Brennan's memoir reveals a rather peculiar and disturbed personality who could be cruel, manipulative, controlling and vindictive. I found the memoir startling and interesting. BUT, having said that, the voice of Brennan is quite irritating and her writing is saturated with trippy-hippy, California, Zen psycho-babble which may be normal and understood on the West Coast of America - but is all rather ridiculous to those of us on the other side of the Atlantic. My sympathy for her did start to wane eventually as her tone can also be quite whiney and I felt like saying, "Oh for god's sake, just get over Jobs and get on with your life." Yes, Jobs was clearly a selfish jerk and treated her appallingly... but she comes off as needy, flakey and unwilling to draw a line under their relationship and move on.

A tecchy trip down memory lane

Chrissan Brennan is a similar age to me and it was wonderful to read about her experiences growing up in California. The fact that she was Steve Jobs's girlfriend was only part of the story - she is a warm and vibrant and talented woman in her own right and her observations were all the more valuable for that.
