Better than the originals.
By Amazon Customer
You would not have been wrong to say that anything that came after the first 2 novels of SAO wouldn't be as good as the initial concept. True as it is, this is the much more superior book to both Aincrad 1 and 2. It starts out one month after the beginning of the death game; two thousand players have died already, and the remaining players are either trying to become stronger or hiding in the towns in the first town. This leaves us with Kirito, a teenager with exceptional skill, and Asuna, a girl who was caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.In terms of the story, fans of the anime adaptation will notice that the second episode was not a part of the original Aincrad novels, but is actually a summarisation of the first story of Progressive. However, because the anime wanted to focus on telling the tale of the original novels, the story was changed and altered in order to not have it contradict the remaining events. The author himself said that he knows that Progressive will mess with the originals, but I feel like Progressive is already a much more sensical and grounded story. Then we have the characters. The whole Kirito and Asuna being a couple is managed a lot better here, because it isn't forced at all, and at times their interactions can be hilarious. Then you have Argo the Rat, who was only really mentioned by name before, who seems to be taking a more prominent role within the story. She is an interesting character, and I'm glad that Kawahara has taken an effort to give us a clearer look into her. Agil, who was one of the better characters in the first book, is given more of a support role here; rarely coming into focus until the fights break out. Klein is mentioned only by Kirito once or twice, but I hope that in the future novels he will become a more relevant character, as I would love to see him and his friends on how they became front-line fighters. Surprisingly enough, we are also given a look into the formation of the Aincrad Liberation Army as they are mentioned in novels 1 and 2; and their leader, Kibaou. Again, no complaints here, he is a very interesting character, while still maintaining his antagonistic properties.I now realise this review is extremely long, and I tried to keep it free from as many spoilers as I could, so my final verdict for anyone who thinks they will like this book; you will. If you haven't read any SAO book, this would be the perfect place to start.

written much like the original novels (first person from Kirito's view

Upon looking at some of the reviews i feel that some people don't understand the purpose of the new Progressive series. This new series is a retelling of Aincrad, written much like the original novels (first person from Kirito's view, 3rd from anyone else's). Just so people understand, this is how Reki Kawahara wanted to write the series originally. This new series give him that chance to tell the story of Sword Art Online is the way he originally wanted, but wasn't allowed to by his publisher. Many people also believe this series is from Asuna's POV when it's from both Kirito and Asuna's view points. This is the story floor by floor, there will be some differences from the original and some parts are written almost the same at the start of the first original book and by what I've read so far will focus on how being trapped in the game will affect Kirito and Asuna personallyand will fill many plot points that we all wanted to know. However, I strongly recommend people to read the Aincrad Arc original books first.

Illuminating of the game's rules and another great way to lose oneself in SAO
By Amazon Customer
Beautifully illustrated - as expected, humourous, and although I haven't read the original books yet, it's a great expansion on the anime, and serves it's purpose in better explaining the workings of the game, as well as telling the story between Kirito and Asuna that we all wish for ;) Postage was pretty good, and order came easily within the expected time frame given, so I don't have any complaints to state beyond a very light scuffing on the edge of the book's spine. However as 'damage' this wasn't at all evident - no split/worn corners, and to be honest, overall better quality than you might find in a public bookshop, and even as someone who takes great care of their books I am in no way displeased with the quality of this product :)
