A fine edition of the play.
By Bluecashmere.
For secondary school use it would be hard to find a better copy of a Shakespeare play than these Oxford School Editions. Their virtues have been spelt out in an earlier review, so no need to repeat them here."The Merchant of Venice " is far from my favourite play; I feel drawn to none of the characters, and find the sentimentalising of Shylock a major irritant. That the Venetians are vulgar and bigoted does not make Shylock an attractive figure, even if there are occasions when we can only commend his eloquent reasoning. Revenge is an ugly sentiment in a play that does little to celebrate generosity of spirit. Of course it remains powerful in a fine stage production and is well-suited to study at the 14-16 level as well as beyond. I shall cling to my battered Arden copy, but highly recommend this edition for those who prefer not to have pages with considerably more notes than text. It has a good, clear introduction and valuable notes as well as plenty of stimulus to discussion.

Solid, if a little dated.

Bought to teach the new GCSE AQA Literature. Was a play I was familiar with, but didn't know in enough detail, so returned to the format familiar from my own GCSE days.As with all Oxford Shakespeare's, the notes are comprehensive and easy to follow, and the supporting material helpful. I wouldn't want to use this as the entire basis for teaching or for revision, but it's a solid starting point. It lacks some of the bells and whistles that more modern publishers use, so a little dry for student to use directly at this point, particularly those who have been weaned on CGP guides!

Kindle version.

I don't like the way this is laid out on my iPad. difficult to see which actor is speaking. Also I wonder if it was transcribed by an English speaker when u and v are exchanged eg loued for loved. Wish I'd looked at a sample before going for this edition.
