Great explorer, poor summary
By James
Amundsen is up there among the best explorers of all time, but the book descends more into current affairs at the time he wrote it than actually into a story of his life. It starts with a bit about the childhood and how he got to be interested in exploration but then passes over the Antarctic exploration and reaching the South Pole in no time at all. The majority of the book is a detailed account of the arguments between the Norwegians and the Italians that arose after the flight over the North Pole in the Norge. The book concludes with some of Amundsen's views on exploration and preparation for exploration which are interesting but seem to be detached pieces of information added as an afterthought. Perhaps the most telling part of the book is a little section that says "refer to the book I wrote about the trip to the South Pole soon after returning". If like me you're expecting a book summarising his exploration through his eyes then you're in for a disappointment, as it seems you need to read the individual books about each trip. Great man, not the greatest autobiography.

Hardly an autobiography
By John Brain
'My Life as an Explorer' was first published in 1927. The following year, Amundsen died attempting to rescue the crew of the Italia, an airship which crashed on its return from the North Pole.Roald Amundsen was arguably the finest polar explorer of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. His many achievements included the first crossing of the North-West passage, the first to reach the South Pole and the first to cross the Arctic continent in an airship. Those who have studied his methods are universally impressed by the scope of his exploits, and especially his meticulous planning, his intimate knowledge of the conditions of polar travel and his outstanding leadership qualities. How could it therefore be that I can only offer 2 stars for this - his autobiography?Firstly it should be said that one thing that Amundsen was not, was an accomplished writer. Though his book 'The South Pole' is a creditable and illuminating account of his 'dash' to the South Pole, its literary qualities hardly match those of Robert Falcon Scott as exemplified in Scott's polar writings.Secondly, this 'autobiography' is hardly an autobiography at all. Its 2008 edition amounts to some 135 pages. Of those, just 35 pages cover his early life and his 2 foremost expeditions of the North-West passage and to the South Pole. 50 pages are spent relating his 2 day airship crossing of the Arctic with the Italian Nobile. Amundsen fell out with Nobile - the latter claimed much of the kudos of the trip - much to Amundsen's obvious annoyance. And Amundsen uses his book to refute Nobiles's more outlandish claims and to castigate the Norwegian Aero Club which handled the administration of the crossing. The book ends with what appear to be 'add-ons' - some unconnected thoughts on other explorers - brief philosophising on the nature of exploration and comments on equipment. There is no index. For me the book is but a shadow of this great man. And it is a great pity that toward the end of his life he felt he had to indulge his, possibly justifiable bitterness with others, by writing a book which totally underplays his magnificent accomplishments. Thankfully there is enough evidence elsewhere to testify to his true worth.
