a French classic!

I remember watching a series on Les mousquetaires as a child in France, and finally decided to read the book in its original version. Loved it, full of humour. Wouldn't recommend reading to anybody who isn't fluent in French as original language would be too challenging.

Excellent for students

I hired this from the library and was unaware that it was a simplified version of the text. One of the reasons I love this book so much is because it is relatively easy to understand and didn't have me reaching for my trusty dictionary. Although it is in a different language, it is just as engrossing and exciting as any English novel, especially since I don't have to "ignore" sentences because I don't understand them. It is a hefty book, with 700 pages and as of yet I am only halfway through reading it. However, all the mousquetaires already feel like close friends and are brilliantly brought to life on the page, and Dumas has an interesting written style that is both formal and informal by turns. For anyone else studying French, I strongly recommend that you give this book a go.

Old-fashioned, timeless, classic

In the year 1625 a young man of 18 from the boondocks, Gascony, comes to Paris; armed with a sword, mounted on an aged horse, and with a burning desire to enter into that elite corps: the King's musketeers. Not an easy desire to fulfil, as the corps is very popular, and already manned to the full. Nevertheless, he manages to challenge the three most famous musketeers (Athos, Porthos and Aramis) to a duel, being young and foolish; and how that ends, plus French politics (the cardinal versus the King), plus international politics (Buckingham and the Queen) plus evil spies (Milady)... read it yourself. I have been re-reading this book and its successor (Vingt ans apres) many times. It is always a pleasure. The language is a bit archaic, the style a bit stilted, but this is a book I will keep re-reading, and enjoying, for many more years!
